Where to start when NBCRNA pass rates slip

A dip in first-time NBCRNA pass rates is one of the most stressful moments a nurse anesthesia program can face. It invites scrutiny from your institution, your accreditor, and prospective students. It is also, in our experience, almost always fixable — if the response is diagnostic rather than reactive.

The most common mistake is jumping straight to a solution: buying a new review product, adding a board-prep course, or tightening admissions overnight. Each of those may be part of the answer, but without a diagnosis you are guessing. Sustainable recovery starts with three questions.

First, where exactly are students struggling? Break results down by content domain against the NBCRNA content blueprint, then map those domains back to where they are taught and assessed in your curriculum. A pattern of weakness in one domain usually points to a sequencing, coverage, or assessment-rigor issue — not a student issue.

Second, when did the program first have evidence? Pass-rate problems rarely appear without warning. Course-level performance, standardized exam scores, and clinical evaluations usually flagged the same students earlier. If those signals existed but did not trigger action, the real gap is your early-warning and remediation system.

Third, what is the admissions and progression picture? Cohort-to-cohort variability in academic readiness shows up two to three years later in board outcomes. Look at trends in admissions data alongside attrition decisions — programs that never counsel a struggling student out sometimes trade attrition numbers for pass-rate numbers.

The pattern across these three questions matters more than any single answer. From it, you can build a targeted plan: adjusted sequencing, strengthened assessment, structured remediation with defined triggers, and honest benchmarks — then track leading indicators every term instead of waiting for the next results cycle.

If your program is working through this right now, we have been there — as program faculty and as consultants. SynesthesiaEDU offers a structured outcomes assessment that turns a stressful number into a concrete improvement plan. Reach out for a free consultation.
